The Academy of Life Underwriting (ALU) provides educational opportunities for professional underwriters. The ALU is overseen by a subsidiary board of the Association of Home Office Underwriters (AHOU) and the Canadian Institute of Underwriters (CIU) which is composed of the past three presidents of the AHOU, the past three chairpersons of the CIU, the past chair of the ALU and the past editor-in-chief of OTR.

The Academy of Life Underwriting produces a series of four exams leading to the professional designation, Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU), on-site and web-based educational seminars and an annual management issues forum.
